The Staff of Life

Why is bread nicknamed the staff of life?
Throughout history, so many people depended on bread as a primary source of nutrients.

A grain of wheat has three parts. What are they?
A germ is where the new plant starts to grow.
A bran is the outer part that contains vitamin B and minerals.
The endosperm is the middle part that is a carbohydrate with little protein.

What is the difference between white flour and whole wheat flour?
Whole wheat- high quality, nutritious
White- bran and germ are removed

When was flour first developed?
3000 B.C.

Why does white bread cost less than whole wheat?
They remove the germ and bran in white bread and they sell those ingredients for pet and animal food.

What does it mean to enrich bread?
It is when they add a vitamin pill.

Not all states require bread and flour to be enriched.

You can tell by the bread's color if its white or whole wheat.

How do manufacturers determine the way to list ingredients?
By weight.

What do whole grains have to do with fiber?
They're a good source of fiber.

Why is it important to get enough fiber?
Fiber is a main source in our diet that is needed for our digestive system.
